Graduate MFA Double System Post Production Workflow

1. Transfer film to videotape get 1 clean digibeta master and 1 DVCAM master with bitc of keycode and matching timecode to Digibeta master. Also get a Flex File at transfer.

2. Prepare to offline the footage using the DVCAM master. Convert Flex file to .ALE (AVID Only)

3. Digitize dvcam tape @24 frames per second (AVID) or 29.97 (FCP or AVID) into a low resolution project in assigned grad hallway nonlinear suite

4. Import audio files recorded on the 744T or 702T into AVID or FCP projects using the >File>Import commands. See worksheet AVID 02 FINAL CUT JUST USE >FILE>IMPORT no other instructions needed.

5. Subclip each slated take of the video clips and audio clips. Subclip in point is on the slate before clap and out point is at the end of the take.

6. "Autosync" (AVID) or "Merge Clips" (Final Cut Pro) to create Synced dailies of audio and video

7. Check each synced clip to ensure sync

8. Edit your footage in the timeline until you are absolutely to the point were you are picture locked. Do not spend time making titles or credits because they will need to be redone in the online. Just make place holders at exact durations the titles will be.

9. Prepare to online footage using Digibeta master and schedule a time with Susanne Kraft to do a sound mix

10. Export an .omf AND Quicktime file to transfer the audio and video to ProTools

Step 10 will take you all the way through opening a ProTools project with the audio and video quicktime to chase. At this point check the sync of the ProTools project and begin doing sound editing preparing for the next step which is On-Lining the video.

Open the Final Cut or AVID project. Select the newly created timeline that was made in step 10 & 11 and batch capture/digitize the video clips from the Digibeta Master at 1:1 uncompressed resolution

13. Create titles and credits to replace the slug and placeholders left in recaptured timeline.

14. When all video is captured output the timeline to a new Quicktime of the onlined version of the project to chase in ProTools.

15. Check sync of the ProTools session with the Quicktime of the online.

16. Edit the sound in ProTools until you lock sound.

17. Color correct the video and create titles to add into the blank placeholders that were left by offline titles. Don't move or do any tweaking on video clips in the online sequence because you could slip sync.

18. Burn a copy of the ProTools session on DVD to take to sound mix.

Once session is saved as a copy place that folder on the Transfer server or burn a Data DVD or Data CD of the session.

Mix your session with the assigned Post-Production Sound Mixer and they will give you a stereo and a 5.1 surround mix sound file that will be added into the online session and joined with the video.

20. Buy 2 digibetas and 1 Betacam SP tape the length of your movie plus @5 minutes. EX:

(12 min movie + 5 =17min) (you will buy 2 22min Digibetas and 1 20min beta) Purchase from

"Equipment Checkout" or a local vendor.

21. Black and code 2 digibeta tapes to output the final video master that has all the final rendered titles

and color correction.

22. Output final video with 60 seconds of Bars and Tone, a 5sec slate and 10 second countdown to both digibetas.

Make DVD's and dubs from the finished Digibeta master.
