318 2nd and 3rd Project Workflow

Open Avid Unity, How To Log on to the AVID LanShare Macintosh

Log onto 318 Server (User Name 318, Password 318)

Mount the 318 Lanshare

Create a new 30i NTSC project on 318 LanShare Volume, in your folder (NTSC, Shared)

Open the project

Every time you logon to AVID go to Tools > Media Creation

Set the destination drive to 318 (NOT STORAGE) and click “Apply to All”

Now new media being captured, imported, or created, will go to 318 by default

Capture your footage (Log and Batch Capture OR Capture All Media and Subclip)

Double check that your footage is going to 318 NOT STORAGE

Convert your CD or Music File to AIFF

Move all music files and sound effects into your 318 folder

Import all music files and sound effects

Double check that your media is going to 318 NOT STORAGE

Import any stills being used

Go to import settings, change the single frame import duration to 60 seconds

Double check that your media is going to 318 NOT STORAGE

Organize your bins

EX: Raw Footage (Master clips), Subclips, Audio, Sequences, Titles, etc

Edit your preferences

Take off snapping: Settings (On Project Window) > Timeline > Edit > Uncheck “Default Snap to Edit”

Now you can hold down the apple key to “snap”, but now a versatile default

Note on Sequences

Each editing session, duplicate your most recent sequence and rename it with the current date. This way, if you make major changes and cannot undo a mistake, you can return to a previous version to fix the problem area.

Assembly Edit

Bring your footage down onto the timeline in the order of your film Get a general idea of the short film, keeping video and audio in sync

Don’t worry about trimming the ends of each clip yet; this is just an assembly edit

Rough Cut

Trim down the extra footage, concentrate on timing

Begin sound design

Don’t worry about transitions, effects, or fine trimming just yet

Fine Cut

Refine each cut point, trimming frames to ensure smooth edits

Begin adding effects and transitions

Finish your edit, bring in a friend to watch your work and give input

Export your sequence to the proper 318 requirements

Bring in a flash drive, hard drive, or DVD to take home your own copy

Put your final 318 quicktime on the classes server, in your TA’s assigned turn in folder
