Audio Problem with Sony Video Cameras

If you are using a Sony PD-150, PD-170, A1U or V1U and you notice the audio is muted, hissing, or buzzing, here's how to correct the problem.

The cause

The microprocessor has been spiked.

Why this happens

If you plug the mic into the camera with the camera power on, you can spike the microprocessor and the audio will be muted, buzzing, or hissing.

How to prevent it

When plugging your mic into the camera, the power to the camera should be turned off.

How to fix it

Reset the unit by opening the LCD panel as if you are going to use it. On the camera body there are some switches and a tiny recessed button called “Reset”. You will need something small like the point of a pen or a paperclip that you have unwound. Poke the reset button. Now plug your mic back in (with the camera power turned off). If you still have audio problems, then something else is causing them.

One important note

If you have already recorded your audio this way, you cannot fix it. Catch the problem before it gets on tape. Always monitor your audio!
