Which cable do I need?
What are you trying to do?
A. Plug a microphone into something ?
All but a handful of our microphones take XLR cables. Most of our sound equipment takes XLR cables. Most people will use an XLR-XLR cable. If you want to reserve this cable, look under “Audio Cables” in the reservation system. If you cannot find this or you need further assistance call us at 512-471-6565 or email checkout@uts.cc.utexas.edu

IF YOU ARE USING THE FLLOWING ITEMS:
Sony Dat, Canon Elura, Canon Optura 40, Sony DHC-40 Sony TRV-19, WITHOUT AN ADAPTER, OR AT Pro 88 mic, you will need an XLR-Mini BALANCED cable. If you want to reserve this cable, look under “XLR-Mini BALANCED” in the reservation system. If you cannot find this or you need further assistance call us at 512-471-6565 or email checkout@uts.cc.utexas.edu

B Get video out of something/put video into something ?
Usually this will require a BNC cable or a BNC to RCA cable. Look at the equipment you plan to use. Most video cameras have an RCA out and most monitors have BNC input, so you would need a BNC-RCA. If you are using a Film camera with a video tap and you are connecting to a monitor, you probably want a BNC-BNC (video tape is BNC) but you may need a BNC-RCA. If you want to reserve this cable, look under “Video Cables” in the reservation system. If you cannot find this or you need further assistance call us at 512-471-6565 or email checkout@uts.cc.utexas.edu

C. Allow two people to monitor audio ?
You want what we call a “Boom Cable”. We have several kinds of “Boom Cables”. The type of equipment you are using will determine which boom cable you need. If you want to reserve this cable, look under “Boom cable”. Once you get there, look at the choices. You should be able to figure out which cable you need. If you cannot find this or you need further assistance call us at 512-471-6565 or email checkout@uts.cc.utexas.edu Outside of U.T. RTF this cable may be referred to as a “splitter” or “Y” cable or by

D. Add extra mics to a Sound Devices recording device ?
You need an “XL-2” This is a short blue cable with an XLR on one end and a multi-pin connector on the other end. If you want to reserve this cable, look under Audio Accessories in the reservation system. If you cannot find this or you need further assistance call us at 512-471-6565 or email checkout@uts.cc.utexas.edu

E. Link a Sound Devices Mixer to a Sound Devices recorder ?
Ask for a linking cable. This is a short black cable called an “XL-1” by the manufacturer (not to be confused with the Canon XL-1, a video camera). If you want to reserve this cable, look under “Audio Accessories” in the reservation system. If you cannot find this or you need further assistance call us at 512-471-6565 or email checkout@uts.cc.utexas.edu
