TO PRODUCE FULL FRAME COLOR BARS ON THE CANON XL-1

  1. Power up the camera.
  2. Simultaneously depress BOTH “shutter” buttons, These are located to your left and below the viewfinder, if you are looking at the viewfinder. They are toggle “up/down” controls. DO NOT RELEASE THE BUTTONS…wait about 5 seconds and the color bars should appear. Now you can release the buttons. Always lay about 30 seconds of color bars to your tape.
  3. 3. To disable (remove) the color bars, repeat the above steps.
  4. NOTE: These are full frame and not SMPTE color bars.

AUDIO FOR CANON XL-1

Audio Switches

a) Rec Level

“A” means automatic “M” means manual

Always use Manual unless the situation dictates that you can’t.

b) Input Selection

“Mic” is for microphone

“Att” stands for attenuate and evenly reduces the overall input 20dB for recording in loud places.

“Audio 1” is for using the RCA jacks to input sound from some other source (such a VCR)

NOTE: ANYTIME YOU CHANGE THE INPUT SELECTION, YOU ALSO HAVE TO CHANGE THE OPTION FOR “AUDIO 1 IN” (You will change it to the same thing as you change the input switch to.

General Sound

If the sound levels you are hearing exceed the “12” point, you have to monitor the sound using headphones (using the Phones Level dial near the headphone jack to adjust headphone volume).

Audio Monitor will allow you to make sound checks.

Menu Settings

a). The XL-1 can record sound in three audio modes

16 bit 48KHz 2-channel

12 bit 32KHz 2-channel plus 2 extra channels for “dubbing” later

12 bit 32KHZ 4-channel recording

You change the mode in the Menu “Audio Mode”

Most people need the 16 bit 48KHz option. You should never have a need to choose the 2 channels plus 2 channels for dubbing.

If you do choose to record in 4-channel mode, you will have the option of playing back either the first 2 channels, the second 2 channels or a mix of the two. You choose this is the OUTPUT CH portion of the menu.

Audio2 is only used for the 4-channel option. It is NOT the second channel in a 2-channel setup, it is the third AND fourth channel in the 4-channel setup.
