About: Through the personal conflicts, financial struggles, and ultimate validation of Austin's most famous filmmakers, Alison Macor's Chainsaws, Slackers, and Spy Kids: 30 Years of Filmmaking in Austin, Texas traces the history of the city's unlikely "overnight" industry success. In tight prose that reads like close-up shots, Macor provides us unprecedented, behind-the-scenes access to the real stories behind Austin's most legendary cinematic tales. From Richard Linklater's role in forming the Austin Film Society and film series, which a friend notes "[originally] seemed like a great scam to us," to the bitter legal battle that ensued over royalties following the massive success of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre," to Mike Judge's misadventures filming a scene from "Office Space" on eternally congested Braker Lane, Chainsaws, Slackers, and Spy Kids does what no previous book has done - chronicles the local film scene's past and in doing so offers us a hopeful glimpse into its future. Macor is a freelance writer and former film critic for the Austin Chronicle and the Austin American-Statesman. She holds a Ph.D in Radio-TV-Film from The University of Texas at Austin and has taught film courses at The University of Texas, Austin Community College, and the Austin Museum of Art.
