Honorarium funds provide small awards to guest lecturers in RTF classes in appreciation of their time. These funds are intended to expose UT students to experts working outside the UT community. The honorarium is not intended as professional-level compensation for the guest speaker's time; it is merely a small "thank you."
Current graduate students, undergraduate students, and current employees of the RTF Department may not receive guest speaker honorarium payments.
The procedure below applies to Production classes:
Please note that these funds are not intended as a bank account for each class to use as the professor sees fit, regardless of how justifiable the proposed expenditure. The funds are for guest speakers only. Please also know that there is not enough money in the production area budget for every class to use its honorarium funds -- i.e., we already budget for the fact that some of you will not use this money. With this in mind, please do be judicious when requesting these funds.
We must know many weeks in advance who will receive honorariums. At the beginning of each semester, RTF staff member Eric Vogler will ask faculty to submit a list of potential guest lecturers for the semester. We can only accommodate infrequent last minute changes. Therefore, if absolutely necessary, faculty may insert replacement or additional speakers onto their "guest list," but must notify Eric of any changes at least TWO WEEKS before the guest lecturer comes.
The honorarium is $100 per speaker. Each faculty member is limited to $200 per semester for each class.
To pay your guest lecturer an honorarium, you must:
-- Respond to Eric's e-mail at the beginning of the semester calling for guest lecturer requests. This e-mail will ask for all possible guest lecturer names, dates or date ranges of their visits, and the courses in which they'll be speaking. From this list we will determine if our budget is sufficient to cover all the requests.
-- If your plans change and you need to request a guest lecturer honorarium later in the semester, complete the Honorarium Form. This form must be submitted to Eric at least TWO WEEKS in advance of your speaker's visit. UT procedure requires this lead time. We simply CANNOT PAY a speaker if the form is late.
-- Please understand that because you're submitting this form after the initial round of requests, we may be unable to approve your request due to budget limitations.
-- Remember that if the speaker has never been paid before by UT, we may be required to get his/her Social Security Number in advance. If this step is necessary, Eric will ask you, the faculty member, to get this information from the guest, who should feel more comfortable giving it to someone they know. You will then need for forward this information to Eric in a timely manner.
-- Bring the speaker by the RTF office when on campus to complete paperwork. They will need to have a picture ID with them. The speaker cannot be paid unless you do this.
The procedure for studies classes:
-- Funding for guest lecturers in studies classes must be approved on a case-by-case basis by the Chair and Executive Committee. Please send an email to Susan Dirks at least THREE WEEKS before the guest lecturer comes, giving the speaker's name and qualifications, the date of the visit, and the class s/he will attend.
-- If the speaker has never been paid before by UT, we must get their Social Security Number in advance. If this step is necessary, staff will ask you, the faculty member, to get this information from the guest, who should feel more comfortable giving it to someone they know. You will then need for forward this information to staff in a timely manner.
