Alison Macor's new book Chainsaws, Slackers, and Spy Kids: Thirty Years of Filmmaking in Austin, Texas (University of Texas Press) chronicles the development of Austin's film scene since the 1970s. Each chapter explores the behind-the-scenes story of a specific movie, such as Richard Linklater's Dazed and Confused and Mike Judge's Office Space, against the backdrop of Austin's ever-expanding film community. Macor interviewed nearly 200 people over the course of the five years it took to research and write the book, which is based on conversations with Linklater, Judge, Robert Rodriguez, Quentin Tarantino, Matthew McConaughey, George Lucas, and many more. Chainsaws also offers the first comprehensive history of the Radio-Television-Film department and contextualizes the department's growth within the local, regional, and national film scenes.
Macor received her master's and Ph.D. degrees from the RTF department and last taught there as a lecturer in 2007. She'll be teaching Independent American Cinema (RTF 370) this fall.
