Curriculum Vita

Mary Celeste Kearney is Associate Professor of Radio-Television-Film, specializing in feminist media and cultural studies. She is also a faculty affiliate of UT's Cultural Studies Program as well as the Center for Women's and Gender Studies. She is a Console-ing Passions board member, and currently serves as Secretary for the Society of Cinema and Media Studies.

Mary's research to date has focused primarily on girls' media culture. She is author of Girls Make Media (Routledge, 2006), and editor of Mediated Girlhoods: New Explorations of Girls' Media Culture (Peter Lang, 2011) and The Gender and Media Reader (Routledge, 2011). She is currently at work on two book projects: Power Chords and Groupie Chicks: Gender in Rock Culture, and Making Their Debut: Teenage Girls and the Teen-Girl Entertainment Market, 1938-1966.

Her recent essays include: "Tough Girls in a Rough Game: Televising the Unruly Female Athletes of Contemporary Roller Derby" (Feminist Media Studies, 2011); "Pink Technology: Media-Making Gear for Girls" (Camera Obscura, 2010); and "Coalescing: The Development of Girls' Studies" (NWSA Journal, 2009).  She has also written several columns on gender and media for FlowTV.org.
