Drew Xanthopoulos is an Austin-based director and cinematographer. His award-winning documentary short, Western Brothers’ Adventure Story, has screened internationally, including at the first annual Vimeo Awards + Festival in NYC, and is used by youth education programs such as The Young Storytellers Foundation in Los Angeles and the Vimeo Video School. His experimental western, The Finalé, which he also shot, was nominated for the 2011 American Society of Cinematographers’ Student Heritage Award. Drew holds an MFA from UT-Austin’s Radio-Television-Film department and regularly freelances as a narrative and documentary cinematographer.
His recent projects as a cinematographer include the PJ Raval-directed “Rantings” scene from AFS’s Slacker 2011 remake, Kat Candler’s 2012 Sundance-Selected short Hellion, and Russell Bush and Elizabeth Oakham’s upcoming natural/social documentary The Vulture Project, which recently wrapped its 4-week shoot in Tibet. He is currently shooting a documentary in rural Bulgaria about the pre-Christian Kukeri Festivals.
Drew’s work as a director and cinematographer focuses on the relationships between characters and their (often changing) environments, and employs uniquely immersive cinematography to guide audiences past their expectations of conventional cinema.
