Admissions: MFA in Screenwriting

The application postmark deadline for Fall 2009 is December 12, 2008. Applications will be available after September 1.

Please do not include your social security number on any correspondence. The EID issued by the University when you submit your application will serve as your identification number.

Note that you must have completed a BA or BS degree (or will have completed one by the beginning of your first semester) in order to be admitted to the MFA program in RTF.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Students applying for the M.F.A. in Screenwriting must complete both the Graduate and International Admissions Center (GIAC) Admission Application (I) and the Radio-Television-Film (RTF) Admission Application (II). Please follow the instructions for each application below.

I. GRADUATE AND INTERNATIONAL ADMISSIONS
CENTER (GIAC) APPLICATION MATERIALS

Regardless of which RTF graduate program you are applying to, you must send the following materials to the Graduate and International Admissions Center (GIAC):

1. Online Application & Application Fee
2. Three (3) Letters of Academic Reference (part of on-line GIAC application).
Although you may be given a choice to send a paper copy, the RTF department STRONGLY requests that you use the on-line option. Please contact us by email if your recommender is not able to use this method.
3. Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended
4. Official GRE Scores received from the Educational Testing Service (ETS)
5. TOEFL score (International Students only)

Deadline
The Graduate and International Admissions Center (GIAC) encourages early submission of materials and early completion of the Online Application. Applicants can complete the Online Application, send official transcripts, and refer GRE scores as early as September 1, 2008.

The on-line application to GIAC and submission of required materials must be completed no later than December 12, 2008.

II. DEPARTMENT OF RADIO-TELEVISION-FILM MATERIALS

All materials listed below must be submitted to the Department of Radio-Television-Film by December 12, 2008.

We prefer that you send the items 2-4 electronically when you receive confirmation that your RTF on-line graduate admission application has been submitted. Please name the file with your last name and other identifying note, for example: jones_sop; jones_resume; jones_writing_sample.

1. RTF On-line Graduate Admissions Application
2. Statement of Purpose (e-mailed to RTF graduate coordinator)
3. Résumé (e-mailed to RTF graduate coordinator)
4. Academic Writing Sample (e-mailed to RTF graduate coordinator)
5. Copies of transcripts from all colleges and universities attended*
6. GRE Scores (copy of score sheet or self-report scores on the RTF application)
7. TOEFL Scores (for international students only: copy of score sheet or self-report scores on the RTF application)
8. Creative Writing Samples:
Please submit one or two creative writing samples that best demonstrate your potential as a screenwriter. While the admissions committee would prefer at least one feature-length screenplay as a primary sample, it is not required. You may also submit short scripts, the first acts of feature scripts, stageplays, or short stories. A TV spec script may be submitted as a secondary sample. Please do not send adapted material unless it is your own work that you have adapted. On a separate page at the front of each creative sample, please provide a logline summary of a few sentences - loglines should not exceed one paragraph.

*Transcripts: The Graduate and International Admissions Center (GIAC) requires an original transcript from each college and/or university that you have attended. U.S. applicants who have taken coursework through an Exchange Program, Semester Abroad or Study Abroad, please contact an Admissions Counselor at GIAC (512-475-7391) to determine if you need an original transcript from the foreign institution.
