Radio-Television-Film, Computer Science, and Fine Arts recently revealed a brand new interdisciplinary program in game design. The gaming industry is rapidly expanding, and already generates more revenue than the film industry. Austin is home to countless gaming companies, and as mobile platforms improve, more and more opportunities will arise. The Game Development Program will prepare RTF students for these opportunities, and allow them to apply their cinematic storytelling skills to new platforms.

Mary Beltrán returns to UT Austin this semester to teach within RTF. Mary recieved her Ph.D. here, and now studies and teaches classes on the construction of race, gender, and class in U.S. television, film, and celebrity culture. Her past work has often focused on Latina/o and mixed-race representation: she is the author of Latina/o Stars in U.S.

The Texas Archive of the Moving Image's Upcoming Events

The Texas Archive of the Moving Image, an organization founded and run by RTF assistant professor Caroline Frick, is presenting two events this fall that seek to celebrate the preservation of flim archives in the state of Texas.

The Celluloid State (Sun, Oct. 9) and Home Movie Day (Sun, Oct. 15) both embody the Archive's pursuit of preserving historical footage related to Texas history. Go to the Archive's website to learn more about these events.

The Gender and Media Reader, published by Routledge, is according to its publisher, "an essential text for those interested in gender and media studies, its main topics, debates, and theoretical approaches." On Sunday, August 21st, RTF Professor Tom Schatz will participate in a Cinema Club presentation of SHADOW OF A DOUBT, the 1943 classic by Alfred Hitchcock. Every month, Cinema Club views different classic films and engages in a post-screening discussion with a guest expert. It's sort of an ongoing class in the study and enjoyment of film. Professor Schatz will provide background and insight into one of Hollywood's brightest hours.

On February 7th, Master Class interlocutor John Pierson went on a loan out, and took the class along, to moderate a highly energetic Evening With Zach Braff in UT's brand new Student Activity Center. The man beloved for Scrubs and Garden State was once a film student at Northwestern. He had the audience of 500 for this maiden event eating out of the palm of his hand.

The Department of Radio-Television-Film was once again well represented at the Sundance Film Festival, held annually in Park City, Utah. Alumnus George Ratliff, a former Sundance participant with his 2007 film, Joshua, premiered Salvation Boulevard, his comedy thriller starring Pierce Brosnan, Greg Kinnear, Marisa Tomei, Jennifer Connelly, and Ed Harris.

RTF alumnus Bryan Poyser's film LOVERS OF HATE was recently nominated for the prestigious John Cassavetes Award as part of IFC's Independent Spirit Awards. The award is given each year to the creative team of a film budgeted at less than $500,000.

Pennycook composition to premier in San Francisco

"For Joe Z," a composition by RTF professor Bruce Pennycook, will be premiered at the ODC Theater in San Francisco by the Paul Dresher Electro-acoustic Band on Friday Nov. 12 and Saturday Nov. 13. The ODC is an old venue that has been recently refurbished. The concerts will be part of the opening events for the new ODC.

Western Brothers' Adventure Story, a short documentary by MFA student Drew Xanthopoulos, was recently named to the Vimeo Awards shortlist. In the documentary category, Xanthopoulos is one of 20 finalists.
