Course description

A study of distinctive art movements that manifest parallel social, philosophical, and aesthetic concerns in both painting and cinema. The course will examine how artists and filmmakers followed the same premise and created an identifiable aesthetic that resonates across disciplines of painting, photography and cinematography. Looking at representations of space, movement and the human figure, we will explore how diverse art mediums have challenged our perception of reality in revolutionary and mystical ways. Subjects include Italian Futurism, Russian Constructivism, Dadaism and the revolutionary films of Dziga Vertov, Russian Icon Painting and the spiritual space of André Tarkovsky, Sixteenth century Italian frescos -humanist perspective in space and its counterpoint in the paintings of Giorgio de Chirico and films by Michelangelo Antonioni, Vermeer and 17th century Dutch painting and its resonance in the work of contemporary cinematographers.
