Prerequisites

For RTF majors, the following coursework, with a grade of at least C in each course: RTF 305; 318 or 319; and 6 additional semester hours of lower-division coursework chosen from RTF 309, 314, 316, 317, and 318 OR 319 (whichever has not already been taken). RTF 351C, Introduction to Digital Animation, is strongly recommended.

This course does not require consent. Registration is open via the online registration system to all RTF majors.

First class day policy

Students who are not on time on the first class day will be automatically dropped.

Course description

This class will cover the basic types and techniques of 3D animation and their applications for film, TV, web and video games. The production side of the class will focus primarily on 3D Studio Max (and some additional work on Poser). Students will learn the basics of modeling, texture mapping, rigging and the mechanics of 3D animating.

Students should already be familiar with the basic concepts of animation, through their own study or from taking RTF 351C, Digital Animation. Basic concepts will NOT be covered in this class.

The class will involve A LOT OF WORK OUTSIDE OF CLASS. Students should expect to spend multiple hours each week on the assignments.
