COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Kurosawa of Seven Samurai and High and Low, Miike of Audition, Miyazaki of Spirited Away: as spectators, we often think of Japanese film in terms of its best-known directors and their most successful works. This course will re-envision Japanese film history to place those works and artists in their industrial, cultural, and stylistic contexts. With an emphasis on the central organizing concepts used by practitioners in the film industry itself, we will investigate the main genres, movements, and cinematic styles that have comprised the Japanese cinema over the past 100 years. Twice-weekly film screenings and readings of works by Sato, Richie, and Cazdyn, among others, will guide our discussions and offer a basis for several short and medium-length writing assignments.
