COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course examines the career of Clint Eastwood, from his sudden rise to international stardom in the "spaghetti Westerns" of the 1960s to his current stature as a cultural icon and leading American filmmaker, underscored by a 1996 AFI Lifetime Achievement Award and best director Oscars for Unforgiven (1992) and Million Dollar Baby (2004), both of which he also produced. While the structure of the course will be historical (and chronological), the main thrust will be critical and analytical, combining various analytical approaches – principally star, genre, and auteur analysis; narrative and textual analysis; and theories of gender and sexuality. We also will examine how the development of Eastwood's career as both star and filmmaker relates to changes in the movie industry at large.
