COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Hong Kong and Taiwan New Waves, the Fifth and then Sixth generations on the mainland: during the 1980s and 1990s, each of the primary film industries of the Chinese world saw a rebirth in its artistic ambitions and commercial viability. Responding to differing dynamics in each society, filmmakers such as Tsui Hark, Hou Hsiao-hsien, and Chen Kaige introduced new techniques, aesthetics, and thematic concerns to established cinematic traditions. In this course, we will explore each of these cases to better understand both the conditions under which these and other directors worked, and to analyze the products of their labors

Course assignments will include readings, class discussions, several short papers, and one longer (12-15 pages) research paper on a topic in Chinese cinema.
