COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course examines the historical and contemporary importance of representations (especially those in the mass media) to maintaining racial hierarchy, as well as how representations have been used to fight racism. This course focuses on the United States , but will also consider non-US racial representations, and the global impact of US media. This course introduces students to theoretical approaches that will help them analyze the roles of race and racism in media and popular culture.

Jennifer Fuller received her PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her research has focused on issues of race and gender in media history.
