COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course provides students with a broad survey of critical and cultural studies of television. Rather than assume that we all know and agree on what television is, we will consider the various ways in which television has been used and understood at different times by different people and organizations. In addition to conducting close analyses of specific television programs, we will consider TV's historical and industrial contexts, as well as its relation to the market and other media industries. We will also consider the relationship between televisual representational strategies, reception practices, and modes of subjectivity such as sex, race, and age. This class is intended for advanced students capable of engaging with sophisticated theoretical texts.
