In this course, we will explore the political, economic, and cultural dimensions of the dynamic relationship between new media and society. We will examine how new media technologies have been used by diverse communities from the early years of the printing press to the age of the internet. Drawing on historical, theoretical and popular writings, we will discuss such topics as the history of new media; utopian and dystopian discourses of "newness" in society; representations of race, gender, class and age in new media; globalization, digitization and convergence of electronic media; and concerns about privacy, piracy and security in the information age. The goal of this course is to critically understand how new media are embedded in various facets of culture and everyday life.
