Degree Program

The Department of Radio-Television-Film offers a Bachelor of Science degree through a multidisciplinary approach to media education. There are no formal “tracks” of study. Students are encouraged to explore the diversity of classes offered.

Degree Requirements

RTF 305 Introduction to Media Studies

This course is required of all RTF majors and is a prerequisite for all other RTF courses.

Media Studies Requirements

Students must take at least two "studies" courses from the following list: RTF 330K, RTF 331K, RTF 331M, RTF 331P, RTF 335, RTF 342, RTF 342T, RTF 345, RTF 347C, RTF 348, RTF 359, RTF 359S, RTF 365, RTF 365K, RTF 365M, RTF 369, RTF 370.

All media studies classes are upper division classes and, therefore, count toward the total 18 upper-division hours that are required in the Department of Radio-TV-Film, as well as the 36 total upper-division hours that are required for graduation.

Credit limitations within the Department and College

Note: No more than 42 hours in RTF
The major requirements add up to 30 hours (12 hours lower-division RTF and 18 hours upper-division RTF). Students may take 12 hours beyond the minimum for elective credit. Please note that there is also a 48 hour maximum in the College of Communication.

Students who meet the minimum requirements for a degree in RTF will have 36 hours within the College: 30 hours RTF and 6 hours outside RTF. Students may take 12 hours beyond the minimum for elective credit. Classes exceeding the maximum will not count toward the degree in any way.
