The 2022 SXSW Film Festival is back in person this year. Because of the Covid-19 global pandemic, the last time the streets of Austin were filled with spring festival-goers was 2019, three years ago. Yet, during this challenging period, our students, alumni, and faculty have continued to make excellent films and critically analyze the media we consume.

The Department of Radio-Television-Film (UT RTF) is thrilled to announce that a screening of the 2022 UT RTF Longhorn Denius Student Film Showcase will be held in person, and after the past two years of pandemic-related disruptions, will be featured again as part of the SXSW Film Festival community programming.
These fiction and documentary shorts, which were completed under the extraordinary challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, represent some of this past year's best student work.

After three quarantined semesters, the RTF community is finally coming together to celebrate our student films the way they were designed to be enjoyed—with an audience. From animation to documentary, CGI to drama... this semester's student work will be on display to the public from Thursday, December 9–Sunday, December 12.

In August, 2021, the Department of Radio-Television-Film’s beloved professor Tom Schatz retired after forty-five years of highly distinguished and tireless service to the University of Texas at Austin. During his career here, Professor Schatz has taught over 12,000 undergraduate and graduate students. He's authored five major books with two more forthcoming. He has served as dissertation advisor for 59 Ph.D. students, thesis advisor for 80 M.A. students, and Department Chair many times over.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences confirmed “TOWER” is one of 15 shortlisted nominees for Best Documentary Feature at this year’s 89th Academy Awards on Feb. 26. Official nominations will be released Jan.
